Article writing is one of my favorite methods of generating leads. It’s free and the benefits of promoting your direct sales products and business opportunity from writing articles is long-term.
Pre-selling from article writing is an effective strategy to sell more products because you’re giving away valuable information that benefits your target customers first before asking for the sale.
Let’s say you’re selling educational children’s toys. If you create a free info-article on the benefits of playing with your children from educational toys, parents are more likely to buy the toys after learning about the benefits.
But if you try to sell to them outright, they’ll resist. Because we don’t like to be sold to.
So why aren’t more direct sellers using article writing to promote their business?
There are several reasons … first, some don’t know about article writing as a marketing method. I certainly didn’t when I got started in direct sales because no one was using this method.
Another reason … direct sellers are taught to tell people about their business. The traditional lead generation method being taught by direct sales companies is to market to your friends and family first.
Sharing your new business with your friends and family is a fine strategy to get your business started. Your friends and family are more likely to buy your products than strangers. And they might even join your business.
But if you rely on this method alone to build your business, your leads will dry up eventually, because you can only sell to your friends and family so many times.
The scenario is common in the direct selling business. New consultants get excited until they saturate their warm market.
It’s one of the reasons the industry has a high attrition rate. But it doesn’t have to happen to you. There’s an easier way to generate leads in direct sales in addition to going after your warm market.
With the internet, it’s easier than ever to promote your business online.
So how do you use the internet to promote your direct selling opportunity with article writing?
First, start promoting your business by using free or low-cost methods such as article writing and marketing the content on social networks and blogging.
Spend some time and develop a content strategy to reach your target market.
*Find out who your target prospects are.
*What are they searching for online.
*And how can you design a content strategy that delivers information to attract their attention.
Instead of pitching your products on social networks or trying to sell to anyone and everyone, think about the products you’re selling and how can you create content related to your products that would appeal to your target market.
You already know the benefits of using your company products. Now you need to package the benefits in an article and use the content to attract your customer’s attention.

Great points Janette. Marketing through writing targeted articles can be an important step away from ‘finding people to sell to’ towards ‘finding the people who are already interested in buying your products’. The second group are always going to be better prospects!
